- About the artwork – This oil on canvas piece is a harmonious amalgamation of influences from various studies, seamlessly woven into a single composition. It draws inspiration from a workshop I conducted at Bethell’s Beach in New Zealand, with the arrangement of the table and chairs borrowed from one of the interior sketches crafted there. The piece also encapsulates the essence of Seaview, located on the West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island, where I stayed and sketched breathtaking views stretching out to the Pacific from a hostel, which intriguingly was once a mental asylum. My intent was to fuse these disparate locations into one cohesive artwork, further enriched by influences from Richard Diebenkorn’s 1950s Californian interiors. The culmination of these diverse elements results in a piece that I find captivating and intriguing.
