Southwark 2

Southwark 2 is part of a series exploring movement and transitional urban spaces. It began as a group of observational sketches made while walking through Southwark, London, toward the Tate Modern.

The composition focuses on the structural clarity of a bridge or underpass, capturing a moment of pause within the journey. A key element is the contrast between textured concrete and the deep blue of a winter sky, with crisp light enhancing both surface and form.

One of a small number of sketches developed into a finished piece, Southwark 2 also reflects the influence of Ben Aronson’s cityscapes, particularly his use of light, reflection, and architectural contrast.
