About the artwork – Created after a visit to New Zealand’s South Island, this work is inspired by Seaview in Hokitika—a former psychiatric institution later converted into a hostel. Many rooms remained untouched, preserving traces of 1960s interiors and a quiet atmosphere suspended between memory and abandonment. Overlooking the South Pacific, the location became a place of focused drawing and observation.
Part of an ongoing series based on repeated studies of the same view, each work explores changing light, colour, and atmosphere. Influenced by interior studies made during the 2020–21 lockdowns, as well as Richard Diebenkorn’s balcony paintings and Edward Hopper’s A Room by the Sea, the series reflects on solitude, stillness, and the emotional resonance of interior space.
