About the artwork – This artwork is part of a small series of studies created in Barcelona during a brief trip. During this time, I made several thumbnail sketches of views in and around the city’s narrow streets in the early evening. The light at this hour produced fascinating compositions that I was eager to capture. Barcelona (Evening Light) was the first of these studies to be developed into a finished work, though it belongs to a wider series. I was immediately struck by the flash of light cutting across the street in a triangular wedge, contrasting with the larger areas of shadow and the sunlit church spire in the background. The effect is heightened by the deep blue of the early Mediterranean evening.
