- About the artwork – Part of several studies of views towards Alcatraz, and taken from a series of drawing’s and colour studies whilst in San Francisco. Views towards the bay from areas of higher ground around the city were a keen subject of mine whilst I sketched around the bay area.This is a large artwork for me as I normally work on a much smaller scale and on board. I enjoy the hard surface and how board allows the paint to move around on the surface. I am also able to sand and treat the surface so that it can be very smooth. Canvas is bouncy and has texture, so I have had to find ways of treating the surface so that it performs like board to paint on, so as a result this combines both the durability and texture of canvas with the hardness of board.
