  • About the artwork –  I recently purchased a home in the summer of 2020, and one of the first things that I wanted to do was to tear apart the garden and create our own. Subconciously it began to be constructed similarly to one of my paintings, with a path leading the eye towards the back of the garden where a raised seating area is partially covered by an apple tree and flanked by a shed. The back of the garden often glows in early evening light, the red brick wall contrasting with the bright lush greens of the grass and trees. The shed’s shadow casts itself across this space, creating a sharp triangle, and out of the composition a tree’s shadow adds to the composition in the foreground. An exotic tree is also an interesting feature. I have often been told that this scene looks like one of my paintings, which I guess is a compliment! This particular study is one of several artworks based on a small series of my garden, and it is heavily influenced by ‘Broad Bay‘, one of my artworks made in New Zealand, and many of the ‘Sunken Garden‘ studies completed in Jamaica whilst working on SkyArts Landscape Artist of the Year. ‘Wheatley Lane- Garden Study’ is the first painting of my current exhibition ‘In Transit- New Works’, taking you on a visual journey from my home to various parts of the world.
