- About the artwork – This painting was made following my first visit to San Francisco. I was immediately drawn to the city’s steep streets, shifting viewpoints and distinctive quality of light. Looking towards Coit Tower, the composition follows the rise and fall of the street, using the city’s topography to lead the eye through the painting.
Rather than depicting the city in bright sunshine, I was interested in the atmosphere of a typical foggy Bay Area day. The muted light simplified the scene into broad shapes and subtle tonal relationships, creating a quieter and more ambiguous image. The work also reflects my interest in painters such as Richard Diebenkorn, whose responses to landscape and place continue to influence my own practice.
Painted in oil on wood, the piece forms part of an ongoing exploration of urban and coastal environments, and how light, weather and memory shape our experience of them.
