- About the artwork – On a visit to New Zealand’s South Island I visited the small town of Hokitika, and in particular Seaview- a mental institution turned hostel they allowed for access to numerous rooms across the site still furnished in 1960’s pattern. The strange atmosphere combined with the beautiful views across the South Pacific. I did lots of drawing here and many of these have resulted in the small series of interiors influenced by studies made in the 2020-21 lockdown, and from Richard Diebenkorn’s balcony studies that he made in the 1950’s. It also reminds me of several Hopper paintings- a Room by the Sea being on in particular.
