- About the artwork –This painting depicts a courtyard scene developed from a series of drawing studies made in and around the town of Arroyo de la Miel in southern Spain. I visited this area several times when I was younger, and its architecture has stayed with me. The small courtyards scattered throughout the town still carry a strong sense of traditional Spanish character.
I was particularly drawn to the warm pink floor tiles, which contrast with the whitewashed walls and, beyond them, the deep blue of a Mediterranean summer sky. The crossing shadows create a layered composition of shapes and angles – something I continually find myself drawn to when working from architectural spaces like these.
