  • About the artwork – During my visit to New Zealand’s South Island, I had the pleasure of exploring the charming town of Hokitika, particularly Seaview—a former mental institution now transformed into a hostel. I was able to access to numerous rooms still adorned with 1960s decor, including a striking red chair that caught my eye. The unique atmosphere, combined with stunning views of the South Pacific, was captivating. I spent a lot of time drawing there, which led to a series of interior sketches inspired by my studies during the 2020-21 lockdown and Richard Diebenkorn’s 1950s balcony studies. The experience also reminded me of several Hopper paintings, especially “A Room by the Sea.” This is part of a series of works all based on views from this location.
