Workshops are a great way to learn new skills, share ideas and meet other passionate artists.

My workshops vary on what each group wish to gain from their experience, be it landscape or urban- but it always tends to be led by my own way of working, with a basis on drawing, sketchbook work, technical aspects such as preparing boards and building up a painting through layering.

Available for one to one, group bookings or artists talks- workshops can be catered for absolute beginners to more advanced painters.

A SENSE OF PLACE

DATE: 1st, 2nd, 3rd JULY 2025 ALL LEVELS ALL MATERIALS AND REFRESHMENTS ARE INCLUDED. LUNCH OPTIONAL This three-day workshop will enable you, the artist, to explore the basic concepts of landscape painting and techniques and develop your personal response to your surroundings. You will have the opportunity to learn new skills and techniques, as well as refine your own practice through discussions and demonstrations that will cover the history and basics of landscape painting- all in the beautiful Staffordshire countryside that surrounds Bullclough. We will focus more so on ‘capturing place’ as opposed to depicting it too literally, so it is also ideal for those who want to move away from detailed work into more expressive styles using either acrylic or oils.We will cover the fundamental aspects of gathering and editing source material through sketchbook work and photography. You will learn how to create surfaces, work with a palette, how to thin paint, mix colours and apply them. We will look at which brushes to use for different effects and how to draw and build up an artwork using underpainting - all with the aim of equipping you, the participant with all the skills to produce a series of artworks that reflects a true sense of place.

5 Star Summer School- A Journey Through The Landscape

DATE: 15th, 16th, 17th, 18,th, 19th JULY ALL LEVELS WELCOME

Limited places and a rare opportunity- A 5 star retreat experience, inckuding a cocktails & canapes party on the first night.

This is an extraordinary opportunity for you to develop as an artist. A total immersion in the Bullclough’s unique environment will enable you to develop skills and processes that ignite your imagination. Over five days of intensive art you will develop your drawing skills in sketchbooks and experience different approaches to landscape painting ranging from representational to expressive abstraction. You will be encouraged to develop an individual response that reflects your personal vision. You will have a wealth of choice over the media you would like to use and have expert tuition and individual tutorials from the course tutors. Each exciting day will be from 10am-4.15pm each day, however our art studios and grounds will remain open until 7pm for you to enjoy the facilities. The week will also include a Summer Exhibition of Bullclough’s artists works and talks from local artists, with optional sketching trips to local beauty spots. By the end of the week you will have extended your artistic repertoire so that you can confidently move forward into a creative future.
