'Interiors/Exteriors- capturing the boundary between inside and out'

Artists have always been interested in exploring their process through the creation of Interior studies. Often from the studio, but essentially from anywhere, they allow us to play with compositions, colour balance, and mark making amongst other things. I find the balance between the interior and exterior an interesting visual setting and it is often a subject matter that is easily accessible and all around us in our everyday lives.
In my practice I have been influenced by the interiors of Edward Hopper, Richard Diebenkorn and Raymond Staprans amongst others, I am keen to capture the boundary between inside and out- the darker interior and a bright sunlit outdoors. A cast of light across the floor or the strong lines of structures such as chairs or furniture contrast with the organic forms of an exterior. All such elements come together to form original outcomes, the style and process of which I hope to share in this workshop.
Together we will explore the location and the areas of focus through initial sketches and discussions, creating thumbnail studies to select an interesting composition. Back in the studio, participants will have the opportunity to learn new skills and techniques, as well as refine their own practice through discussions and demonstrations that will cover the history and basics. These will equip you with all the skills to produce an artwork that reflects the aim of capturing both an interior and exterior study.
The focus will be on ‘exploring a place through interiors and exteriors’ – working on composition, colour theory, etc, and then students will complete a painting or perhaps a whole series! Time spent outside will be dependent on the weather conditions and we will mostly be based indoors.
